Last week, I left my job at the liquor store (on friendly terms). Over the past year, I have met quite a bit of interesting people, which I shall list now. No, wait……now.
-Bug Spray Man (he always reeked of bug spray)
-Chops (named for his pork chop sideburns)
-Shaky Mike (alcoholic whose hands shook uncontrollably when he needed a fix)
-(Big) Sexy: a rather large woman who insisted on people calling her Sexy. I once called her Big Sexy (thinking that is what she introduced herself as), and when I saw her a couple months later, she had lost a noticeable amount of weight. She was still big.
-The guy who insisted that I was wrong for not accepting his United Kingdom driver’s license as legal proof of age in the United States.
-The guy, when asked for proof of age, showed me a tattooed birthdate on his arm. I did not sell to him.
-The guy who tried to use his friend’s ID to buy liquor. The first reason it didn’t work is because him and his friend only look vaguely alike. The second reason it didn’t work is because the ID belonged to a guy I knew in high school.
-the girl who came into the liquor store from a cab, promptly told me a story about how she had just checked her friend into rehab, then gave me her phone number. I did not call her.
-the other girl who came in and gave me her phone number without me asking, only to not answer her phone nor return my calls when I dialed her.
-the guy who compared swallowing glass to swallowing boogers.
-the CNU students whose parties I was invited to and attended over the past year.
-the guy, who when asked how he was doing, said, “well I didn’t wake up looking at dirt so I’m doing just fine.”
-the depressed guy who I thought was going to kill me.
-the person who, on my last day, left a ten-dollar bill in a pint-sized bag, with the message: “4EVAN. Work Hard. Study.” Whoever you are, thanks!
-the other customer, Cindy, who gave me a fifteen-dollar gift card on my last day.
-every regular customer who wished me well.
-and of course, the people I worked with.
Well I shall be heading to Nags Head for the next week with the family. Later kids.
